Apartment Information:

    Our facility is located in Highland Park, CA. This is in the north part of Los Angeles near the city of Pasadena. We are on the corner of Figueroa Street and La Prada. We have 3 different street addresses, 6819-6817 N. Figueroa and 6079 La Prada, Los Angeles, CA 90042. Our facility consists of 33 apartment units made up of studio, one and two bedroom units. Rent is currently at monthly rate of $360.00 for an individual and $380.00 for a family. Utilities are not included.    
   
    Each apartment is designed for the safety of the deaf-blind. We have installed smoke detectors and emergency pull cords to enable the deaf-blind to alert our sighted hearing staff to any problems that need immediate attention. There are currently 5 full-time staff and 1 part time staff living on the facility and there is someone available 24 hours a day. There are rails and chains all around the grounds making walking easy and safe.


We also offer the following services:

  • Laundry Room – We have 5 coin operated washers and 5 coin operated dryers as well as an outdoor clothes line for our tenants use. Tenants are put on a weekly schedule with free times available on a first come first use basis.

  • Exercise Room– Our exercise room is equipped with a treadmill, stationary bike, rowing machine, and weight machine. This equipment is available for use anytime on a first come first use basis.

  • Lounge – Our recreation room is available for company to come and visit and for special gatherings. We have a small Braille library available, as well as an Optelec CCTV to magnify reading material for those with some limited vision. There is a large screen TV with VHS and DVD player attached for use by the residents.

  • Dining Room – We have a full service kitchen where we have special meals for Holidays and other special occasions. We also offer a dinner meal which is served Monday through Friday. The current cost of the meal is $4.00. A weekly menu is put our facilities weekly bulletin that is sent to every resident on Thursday of each week. The residents can decide what meals they would like to attend. Residents can sign up in the office to eat the meals of their choice on either a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Meals are paid for at the time the resident signs up to reserve their meal.

  • Office – Our office is open Monday through Friday from 1 pm to 2 pm and from 10:30 am to 12 pm Saturday. We encourage our residents to use this time to obtain change for the washing machines, buy stamps, or to ask questions or have special needs met.

  • Grace Bible Deaf Church – GBDC meets on the grounds of COC. We currently gather for a time of worship each Sunday afternoon from 2 to 3:30. This is followed by a time of fellowship in our dining room from 3:30 to 4. Our services are presented both orally and in ASL. We have a number of volunteers that come to interpret for our deaf/blind attendees using whatever means of communication that the deaf/blind individual feels most comfortable using. Our time of worship is focused on God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Bible is exposed on a verse by verse basis with a desire to present the clear and literal teaching God desires us to have. All are invited to attend this time of worship.

  • Social Activities - We have our own 30 passenger bus and 15 passenger van. We plan activities throughout the year. Residents are informed of different activities as well as other news in our weekly bulletin. Costs of outings depend on the activities fees and distance traveled. Many of our residents are also involved at the Braille Institute of America. A bus from the BIA picks up here every Friday that classes are in session. Various classes are offered such as Crafts, Cooking, ASL, Braille, and Current Events. There are also special events throughout the year for the students. Application must be made to the Braille Institute to register for classes. A recent verification of blindness from your doctor is one of the requirements.

  • Prospective Residents:
Prior to acceptance to the facility an application must be completed and then approved by the board. It is required that the prospective tenant is able to live independently.  A recent medical report and doctor’s verification of deafness and blindness must be included.  After an applicant is accepted, they are contacted regarding the availability of an apartment.  We currently have 1 apartment available.  If all apartments are full, qualified applicants will be put on a waiting list.  If you are put the waiting list you will be notified as soon as an apartment becomes available.
